Inlays and Onlays
Unlike crowns, inlays and onlays are used just on the chewing surfaces of the back teeth. An inlay fits within the confines of the tooth and an onlay covers the entire chewing surface. They are usually made from porcelain to blend in with natural teeth but can also be made from composite resin or gold, as it is such a durable and hard-wearing metal.
How are inlays/onlays fitted?
During your first appointment, areas of decay or old fillings are removed, the cavity is prepared and an impression of the tooth is taken to ensure a perfect final fit. A provisional inlay or onlay will also be put in place to protect the tooth while the permanent one is being prepared. During your second visit, this tailor-made inlay or onlay is fixed in place with dental cement.
What are the advantages?
Inlays and onlays offer an effective and natural looking solution for teeth that need more extensive restoration than conventional fillings are able provide and therefore help to preserve more of the natural tooth.
